Janis Tyler Johnson has collected the stories of six mothers who relate, in their own words, their experiences as mothers of incest victims. Their accounts challenge the collusive, mother-blaming theory of incest families. Mothers tell how they discovered the incest secret, the ways they responded, and the meanings that incest held for themselves, their daughters, husbands, and families.

This slim treatise seems more like an outline than a finished project. A professor of sociology and social work at Immaculata College (Immaculata, Pa.), Johnson refutes many generally accepted theories about mothers whose daughters are sexually abused by fathers or stepfathers (i.e., that the mothers are somehow absent, or that they fail to protect their daughters from the abusive fathers). However, as Johnson herself acknowledges, the small size of her sample group--only six mothers--makes it difficult for her to draw any conclusions. Her interviews with these women do bring forward many poignant revelations; for example, one woman admits with embarrassment that she had never heard of incest before it occurred in her own family. Since she has not set out to draw any general conclusions from her research, Johnson is able to paint an individualized portrait of each woman and avoids twisting their stories to fit some theory. Her discussion of the mother-daughter relationship is particularly varied, showing that some of these relationships were extremely close, while some were less than loving, estranged or rivalrous.

From the Back Cover
This book is the first direct account of incest-family mother. Six women relate their experiences in accounts that challenge the collusive mother model. They tell how they discovered the incest, why the secret was kept, how they responded to and explained events, and how they interpret the consequences for their daughters, husbands, families, and themselves.

Outdated, but okay
By Anne Moss Riley
An easy-to-read book that draws upon mothers' real stories about incest within their families. The author weaves together the stories of six women and highlights their experiences before and after discovering the incest. The book is somewhat dated as the author carefully explains how these women do not fit the mold of being collusive or powerless within their marital relationships which was the generally accepted model in the late 1970s. The most potent aspect of the writing are each woman's story told in her own words. The common denominator for all the women was the since of betrayal from their partners and how incest shattered the foundation of their lives. The author revisits the women six years after the initial interviews and relates how recovery is possible and even beneficial. As an incest victim, you may find solace, grief, or anger written between the covers of this book. As a mother of an incest victim, you may discover that you are not alone.

A no win situation for mothers
By Janet Mackie
No matter what, mothers get blamed because the thinking is that, had these mothers done their Christian duty, they would have been omnicient and loving and incest would never have happened in the first place, period. So of course it is the fault of the child's mother. Whatever anyone thinks no one is omnicient and mother love is not miraculously protective. The way "family" values is set up even today we still pretty unanimously blame the mother, perhaps even more than the father, who is seen as "damaged" or "sick" instead of just an undisciplined male satisfying his appitite for sex no matter where he finds it. (Another "boys will be boys" regretable situation that taboo does little to discourage. Although the "taboo" is agreed upon, people turn their eyes away from the occurance, reluctant to look into "family business". As we ignore the taboo, and entertain ourselves with TV shows about serial rapists, incest remains silently prevalant). I won't even mention numerous pastors and priests, setting down "Family Values" continued to satisfy themselves at the expense of children. But when it happens in the family, somehow it is the mother we blame. Don't we all question where Dorothy Sandusky was while her husband molested her adopted son while at the same time he was being protected by his superiors as he molested numerous other young boys? But of course she "should have" known.
This book is not really "outdated" and is one of very few books even exploring incest from a mother's perspective. This book's strength is that it is one of very few books just interviewing mothers without prejudice or condemnation. The weakness of this book is that it does nothing to explore or explain why our society teaches women to accept the blame, to condem themselves because they too are conditioned to believe that mother love can do miracles and that her child's safety ultimately depends upon the "quality" of the mother in the family. Women cannot defend themselves because whatever they say in their own defense, "They" allowed "it" to happen did they not?
