Willem Kymmell is a practicing architect with more than 30 years of experience in the field. He is also an Associate Professor of Construction Management at California State University (Chico), where he teaches building information modeling and construction documentation, construction document analysis, specifications, building code analysis, and architectural history. Mr. Kymmell's private practice includes residential and commercial commissions, consultations, and virtual building software training.

strong on concepts!

I was interested in this book because it seemed less like a "how to" book and more about what makes this technology work. It has not disappointed on those issues at all. Very rich in information. The biggest weakness I have found is that the author clearly favors certain software packages over others, which I can understand... everyone has their preferences. However, when discussing Autodesk's Revit platform, I found the book to be overly biased and sometimes, flatly, mistaken. This issue does not however, severely detract from the overall value of the information. Where the book seeks to discuss BIM without focusing on specific software, it is without equal. As long as you aren't making purchasing decisions based on the information, anyone familiar with the basics of BIM will find it fascinating.

Comprehensive overview of BIM

I picked up this book a couple years ago as I was entering the world of BIM in my professional life. I work for a major construction firm in the United States. This book provided me with a very through overview of BIM. A few points of interest:
1. One of my favorite sections is right at the beginning. It goes through the history of building going back centuries to outline how the building process has become so adversarial and somewhat dysfunctional. Solving this dysfunction is one of the major selling points of using BIM, and it was very interesting to see how we got to where we are today in the industry.
2. This book was published back in 2008, and as we all know, technology moves at a swift pace these days. So some of the references are a bit outdated. However, I still use this as a reference, as the information on the basic concepts and processes are still useful.
3. An architect wrote this book, and it is written more from the design perspective than from the construction perspective. If you work on the construction side like I do, I would highly recommend BIM and Construction Management: Proven Tools, Methods, and Workflows.

Excellent insight

Well organized, well written. Provides information about model composition which most books on this subject do not include. Very informative. Organizations looking to move down the BIM/VDC path should definitely take the time to read as they will learn a great deal about the process changes needed to effectively utilize 3D models in their workflow.
