About the Author
Dr Winifred Aldrich was formerly Professor of Clothing Technology at Nottingham Trent University. She has also written two books specifically to enable students to extend their knowledge of fabrics and tailored garment cutting: Fabric, Form and Flat Pattern Cutting and Pattern Cutting for Tailored Jackets. Her other books include: Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear and Metric Pattern Cutting for Children's Wear and Babywear.

Love this Pattern Drafting book!

I bought this book having compared it to Helen Joseph Armstrong in the bookstore. I found it less bulky and easier to find patterns and ideas because the layout is more condensed and not spread over 500 pages. The amount of information in there is phenomenal. I have Dorothy Moore's Pattern Drafting and Dressmaking book as well, but I keep coming back to Aldrich! I drafted her skirt pattern and used pattern drafting principles in her book-and the skirt was the most perfectly form fitting 7-gored skirt I have ever made! I plan to get all of her books on Pattern Drafting. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because the diagrams aren't labeled Fig1, Fig2 etc-so sometimes I get confused as to which diagram the instructions refer to. But it is not an insurmountable difficulty.

Practical and usefull to make your own patterns

After using this book for some time, I can now recommend it gladly. It is a book for those who know how to sew, but need to get their patterns in magazines or other publications. With this book, if you are familiar with the metric sistem (to do this with inches and all its crazy partitions would be madness, i think) you will be able to take your own measures, and construct a whole range of different models that fit you just perfect. It is a method to learn how to draw the basic block patterns and then how to modify them to construct all the variations. All your basic wardrobe is there, including bodyshapers, bikinies, jeans, tracksuits, all kind of skirts and trousers, jersey and tailored dresses and jackets... well, it is really complete. I am so enthusiastic about this book I just bought the one for men's wear, to be able to construct the perfect pants for my husband. A must for any home dressmaker.

Addendum: I am working with the book and have found two big problems so far. There are two patterns with side panels which I cannot figure out, for the sake of me. One is the Semi-Fitted princess line dress, in page 116 (where do the side panels go???) and the other is the Fitted Casual Jacket (where do I draw the panel lines????) Maybe these references are somewhere in the book, but I have been going around and around and I cannot find where to draw these lines). If somebody knows, I would gladly listen!!!

This book is for anyone interested in working with either C# or Visual Basic or both. Honestly, if you are a person with a trace of logical thinking and the desire to learn, you can do everything discussed in this book. When you're done, you can be confident that you are able and ready to pursue and master advanced programming topics with every reason to expect complete success. The vocabulary you will need is developed in a methodical, thoughtful process by relating techniques to results. It is not a memorization exercise. My personal preference is C#, probably because I started working with "C" at AT&T Computer Systems when "C" was in its infancy. For a beginner, VB is a little less demanding and accomplishes the same job, just a little differently in terms of syntax and a few key words. Remember the old saying "Monkey see, Monkey do"? It should say "Monkey see, Monkey do, Monkey learn" The text is very focused . . . Almost every sentence is an instruction to do something . . . or explains very pointedly the expected results of what you are going to do. In most "Teach Yourself books" you read many, many pages and get (forget) concepts confused before you put them to work. Forgetting or being confused by waiting will not be your experience this time. Concepts are presented in bite-sized units that make immediate use of the ideas. The focus is "doing" I'll say it several times before we're done . . . If you're not making any mistakes, you're not trying hard enough! Experiment and learn. I progresses rapidly through the fundaments of developing and testing applications that work, with minimal discussion of issues of little or no immediate use. The vocabulary is kept to every possible extent, to plain English. The examples are written with the idea that they will be used as reference and "copy and paste" code for other application the reader will develop on their own, later. Neither time nor effort is wasted filter

This will get you oriented to Visual Studio quickly.

I'm an I.T. professional with a master's degree in computer science. Even with a degree like that under your belt, you don't simply install an integrated development environment like Visual Studio and instantly start using it like an expert. You still have to get oriented and put in your hours. I recently downloaded the free Express edition of Visual Studio from Microsoft, and am using it on a Windows 7 system. I needed a primer to get going with the basic Visual Studio skills in reasonable time.

This no-nonsense book cuts to the chase and gets you up and running fast. Distracting extraneous information is excluded, so you won't get bogged down. (Save that other stuff for later.) The way the book is written, you can choose to focus on either C# or Visual Basic, or both. I chose to focus on C#, and believe I'll have it down before the end of the year... enough to support some pet projects and possibly even be useful at work. Then, maybe I might go back and study Visual Basic.

If you're trying to get familiar with Visual Studio so you can start doing useful stuff with it soon, get this book and do exactly what it says!

Wrong code examples

The book started out fine. I thought that this was the perfect opportunity to try and teach someone to program in VB and C#, then 30 minutes after we started reading it we found out that there were mistakes on the code(chapter 3, the code for moving the input from one form to the other) which can create confusion and frustration from someone just starting to code. Good otherwise, if it was not for the mistakes in the actual code I would have given it 5 stars.

this whole book is an ache. and a balm. daley-ward effortlessly mines the bone. the diamond from the difficult. the things that are too bright and taboo. she lays her hands on the pulse of the thing and gives wide breath to the epic realities of women. love. sexuality. poverty. sex work. sadness. joy. damage. and restoration. assigning them all the grace. all the nurturing. and all the love they deserve.

a master storyteller, daley-ward is uncannily attentive and in tune to the things beneath life. beneath the skin. beneath the weather of the everyday. her poetry and prose are intimate and distant. sonorous and staunch. unwilling to yield and wondrously supple. delicate and metallic. daley-ward's extraordinary talent and ability to both see and write the veins of life is a gift. and it is one that i am truly. truly. grateful for.

CLOSE TO THE BONE

As someone who writes my own Poetry, I'm going to be completely transparent here and say, rather strangely, I'm not really that interested in other people's. I freely admit that makes me rather self-absorbed and self-indulgent. Then, this book came to my attention- by a fascinating woman - and I. COULD. NOT. PUT. IT. DOWN. It's become one of those handful of books that I take with me on holiday- when I move house, it doesn't go into storage with 99% of my other books. Because it's too important and too inspiring. I need it near me at all times. This book is probably one of the best 3 books I've ever raid, if not, DEFINITELY one of the top 5 and CERTAINLY the best book of Poetry I've ever read. Brave, startling, honest, autobiographical, beyond clever. The poem in this book entitled 'Mental Health' has since gone onto become my favourite poem of all time. This book changed me and inspired me that I could write my own. The writer is quite simply, a master of language and words and creating visions. Making you think about situations in ways that you've never even thought of before. Relatable, accessible, dignified, truthful, integral, necessary- it's a book you go back to for repeat readings and sip in and out of to help you through certain days such is its magnificence. I for one, in future, will buy this as a birthday or christmas gift for anyone I feel would appreciate how precious it is. A startling debut. I literally cannot wait to see what Ms. Daley-Ward produces next. I implore you to buy, read, share and discuss this book with friends.

You Need Not Write a Novel to Tell a Story

Yrsa Daley Ward's writing is raw, powerful and provocative. The poems in this collection address gender and gender identity, sexuality, misogyny, sexual assault, depression, suicide, family, sex work and so much more. There are not poems that will soothe your soul or ease your mind. The words are sharp, and more often than not, the endings are bittersweet. But these poems are ever so vital and necessary. An amazing collection.

About the Author
Born in Bowersville, Ohio, USA, on May 31 1898, Norman Vincent Peale grew up helping support his family by delivering newspapers, working in a grocery store, and selling pots and pans door to door, but later was to become one of the most influential clergymen in the United States during the 20th-century. Educated at Ohio Wesleyan University and Boston University, he went on to become a reporter on the Findlay, Ohio, Morning Republic prior to entering the ministry and went on to author some 40 books. Peale confessed that as a youth he had 'the worst inferiority complex of all,' and developed his positive thinking/positive confession philosophy just to help himself.
