Great for Piano Beginners!
By A Customer
The John W. Schaum Piano series is an excellent way to introduce children to the piano. Geared to the early grade school level, A-The Red Book is a follow-up to Pre-A-The Green Book. All the piano books in this series feature colorful illustrations, easy-to-read notes, and simple hand positions. The book progresses from very simple melodies at the start to more complex "melody and chord" songs at the end. Children love to sing along as they play the notes. I have found this to be a great way to for younger kids to learn to read music and begin their study of the piano.

Excellent for kids and adults
By Beloved121
I used the older version of this book when I was a child and it was excellent. Easy to read and understand. Perfect for learning to play the piano if you want to go at your own pace. I had a private instructor as well but the book was the key to my lessons. I have almost the entire collection but they are a bit out-dated so I plan to buy the new ones soon for my own review, and also so I can teach my kids to play when they are old enough. I loved the John W. Schaum series. Note: These books aren't really theory based so if you intend to teach yourself, you'll also need a book to really teach you the basics (Tip: I used the AB Guide to music theory by Eric Taylor, it's alittle difficult to find now though), once you master the theory, you'll be on your way to playing tons of songs. Fun fun fun!!!

A great series of learn-to-play books
By D. Gannon
I was very happy to be able to find the John W. Schaum Piano Course books. Many years ago, I was taught to play piano using these books and now I'm able to teach my children the same way. This book provides a very simply step-by-step approach to piano playing that is challenging but still easy enough for children to understand and to practice what they've learned on their own.

One of the good applied R probability books
By I Teach Typing
There are two good probability with R books on the market, this one and Probability with R: An Introduction with Computer Science Applications. Both are nicely written but they are designed for different audiences. Where Probability with R is readable by any educated audience, it has its examples firmly embedded in computer science. This one has appealing examples from all over the map. In probability with R the code is in the foreground. Here the R code is relegated to code insert boxes. Although the code is deemphasized it is present throughout and the website that accompanies the book has the script files. Beyond these two points, the largest difference between the two books is the emphasis on math. Probability with R is nowhere as mathematically rigorous. This book is designed for readers who have completed multivariate calculus and the math is prominent throughout. Each chapter has a set of probability problems. Sadly the author only includes solutions to half and the solution only has the answer not steps (code) needed to get the solution.

So, get this book if you are looking for engaging examples that are covered with code and a solid dose of math. If you are looking for more thorough coverage of R, get Probability with R instead.

Good for math/stat majors wanting theory fundamentals
By Jesse Walker
As statistics books go, this one's actually readable. As a doctoral candidate in biology (with at best a basic understanding of calculus), I could follow along. That said, it's academically focused on theory, not practice. This is not the book you want if you aren't comfortable with mathematical (and probabilistic) equations and aren't interested in the theory behind probability. If you just want to be able to apply the stuff to practical problems, this book will get you there, but with way more theory than needed.

It's interesting, and a good book, if you want the mathematical and statistical foundations of probability theory. Explanations are good, examples are straightforward (except Example 1.23; there are two thinking errors in that one, leading to an incorrect answer), and R code isn't terribly hard to find to allow simulation to follow the examples in the book (Note: getting this book and following along will not teach you R). I would have benefited a bit more if the text were either dumbed down a bit (more english, less 'math'), or if my math background were more rigorous.

If you're mathematically-inclined, and want a good primer on probability theory, this would be a good choice. If you're looking to learn R, or want something more easily understood by those without a rigorous math background, this ain't your book.

Confusing and obscure
By avid reader
I know that the book is first-edition, and so there are already revisions to be made, but the format makes the material hard to understand. For example, the book will provide a sample question and begin to explain how to solve it, and then will delve into some other tangent, only to return to a solution to a completely different problem that was never even stated!!! The textbook lacks sufficient examples to guide the student to solve the chapter problems. Overall, the book has noticeable typos and a poor structure. I would not recommend unless you already possess a strong background knowledge in probability or reinforce the book with at least one other textbook.

Like-Minded: Externalism and Moral Psychology (MIT Press), by Andrew Sneddon

What are the psychological foundations of morality? Historically, the issue has been framed as one of emotion versus reason. Hume argued that reason is the slave of the passions and so morality must be based on them; Kant argued that moral law is given by rational agents to themselves in virtue of their rationality. The debate has continued in these terms to the present day. In Like-Minded, Andrew Sneddon argues that "reason" and "passion" do not satisfactorily capture all the important options for explaining the psychological foundations of morality. He proposes a third possibility: that the cognitive processes that make us moral agents are centrally constituted by features of our external environments. Sneddon calls this the Wide Moral Systems Hypothesis (WMSH).

The WMSH fits within an array of positions known as externalism or the Extended Mind Hypothesis, according to which the world outside our bodies is not just input to cognitive processes located within our brains but partially constitutes those processes. After explaining the WMSH, Sneddon presents a series of more particular hypotheses about distinct aspects of our moral psychology: moral judgment, moral reasoning, the attribution of moral responsibility, and production of action. Sneddon revisits overlooked externalist aspects of moral psychology, noting the integration of agent and environment found in existing research. With Like-Minded, Sneddon offers an innovative contribution to work in both moral psychology and the Extended Mind Hypothesis.

Review

An intriguing contribution to the fast-growing field of empirical moral psychology... lays out surprising but important implications... those interested in externalist theories or empirical moral psychology will find much of interest.

(Philosophical Psychology)

Sneddon makes useful contributions to several empirical debates about moral judgment.... I hope the psychologists and philosophers whom Sneddon engages with will find his hypothesis worth investigating and his approach to their research worth considering.

(Ethics)

Is the extended mind hypothesis just philosophical navel-gazing? Not according to Andrew Sneddon. Like-Minded provocatively explores how 'going wide' about the mind enriches recent empirical and philosophical work in moral psychology. Sneddon's naturalism about the mind shows a refreshing combination of rigor humility and openness. Anyone thinking about minds and morality will find much in Like-Minded of value.

Treason: Nixon and the 1968 Election, by Don Fulsom

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

―Oath of Office of the President of the United States

Right hand held high, Richard M. Nixon was sworn into the office he had already betrayed. In the months before the 1968 election, Nixon and his allies―including the “Dragon Lady” Anna Chennault and Henry Kissinger―collaborated with foreign nationals to undermine Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson’s Vietnam peace talks in order to curry public favor for Nixon and his secret plan to bring an end to the Vietnam War. From the Inside Flap

This stunning work lays bare the machinations of Richard Nixon, who deliberately prolonged the Vietnam War to win the 1968 presidential election and caused the slaughter of thousands of the citizens he was sworn to lead and defend. After two crushing defeats in the early 1960s, Nixon burst back into the political sphere with a bid for the White House in 1968, running against Democratic candidate Vice Pres. Hubert Humphrey. Nixon hoped to curry public favor by promising to end the increasingly unpopular Vietnam War, but Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson also pushed for peace in the aftermath of the strategic disaster of the Tet Offensive.

From campaign to cover-up, Nixon took matters into his own hands. While the media feverishly speculated on the nature of Nixon’s secret plan for peace, Nixon obstructed Johnson’s peace talks. Author Don Fulsom presents the indisputable evidence—only recently revealed—of Nixon’s transgressions and their long-lasting repercussions. Fulsom, who covered Nixon’s presidency during his career as a reporter, calls in legal and psychological experts to determine whether Nixon actually committed treason and how his wracked mind twisted events and facts. New light is shed on Hubert Humphrey, who, although he was aware of Nixon’s sabotage, sacrificed his chance at the presidency in interests of national security.

Filled with extraordinary insight and damning evidence, this work rewrites the narrative of Nixon’s ambition and subterfuge, calling into question the trust placed by the American people in the highest office in the land.

Don Fulsom is an adjunct professor of government at American University, where his courses include Watergate: A Constitutional Crisis and Who Killed JFK? Born in Buffalo, New York, he earned his degree in history from Syracuse University. His impressive journalism career spanned five presidencies and sweeping global changes, and he is widely regarded as a political expert and Washington insider. Fulsom has been a sought-after guest on networks including C-SPAN, the History Channel, CNN, Fox News Channel, Voice of America, USAToday.com, and BBC, as well as numerous radio programs. Since his retirement from journalism, Fulsom has continued to write noted investigative articles, which appear in publications such as Crime Magazine. His work has been praised by renowned historian Douglas Brinkley and Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington reporter Patrick J. Sloyan and has been featured in the Huffington Post, Publishers Weekly, and the Boston Globe. Fulsom lives in Washington, DC.

From the Back Cover

Richard Milhous Nixon, president and consummate manipulator, is still a fascinating figure more than forty years after his resignation over the Watergate scandal. Watergate, however, was only the most infamous of his transgressions; Nixon’s record of political subterfuge for personal gain began earlier with his manipulation of the 1968 presidential election. Running on the promise of a secret plan to end the Vietnam War, Nixon would do anything to ensure no one else could claim the credit and public approval that would come with forging peace. Nixon sabotaged the 1968 Paris peace talks, ensuring his own election. His greed came at a bloody cost: thousands died in the prolonged war. But did Nixon actually commit treason?

With newly released information, fresh interviews, and a journalist’s keen eye, author Don Fulsom investigates the true extent of Nixon’s crimes from campaign through resignation. He compellingly portrays a cast of characters including Henry Kissinger, South Vietnam’s president Nguyá»…n Văn Thiệu, and “Dragon Lady” Anna Chennault. Impeccably sourced and drawing on recently declassified documents, as well as Fulsom’s experience covering the 1968 election and Nixon’s presidency, this incisive volume lays bare secrets that toppled nations.

Don Fulsom is a former White House correspondent and a Washington bureau chief of United Press International who covered the Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton presidencies. He has written for the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, Esquire, and other publications. Fulsom, a correspondent for Crime Magazine and professor at American University, lives in Washington, DC.

Fascinating page-turner, with revealing new evidence of Nixon's psyche and conduct focused on 1968 election and Vietnam
By Mitchell K
In a fascinating read, Don Fulsom unearths new evidence demonstrating the extraordinary efforts taken by Richard Nixon to obstruct President's Johnson's effort to reach a peace agreement for the Vietnam War. Mr. Fulsom tells a compelling story about Richard Nixon's obsession with becoming President of the United States in a revealing tale that, despite all of the literature on Richard Nixon, gives a greater window into his complex personality and disposition, and significant events in history that, as evidenced by the book, had not been fully told.

The story provides a fresh perspective about the 1968 U.S. Presidential Election and the Vietnam War, given the recent release of documents and tapes concerning Nixon. Mr. Fulsom takes you on a wild ride through the mind and efforts of Richard Nixon, sourcing individuals close to the former president. The book also touches on some interesting political dynamics, including how Hubert Humphrey responded to learning about Nixon's conduct. I was personally fascinated by Mr. Fulsom's discussion of Nixon's personal life, creating more questions about the infamous president.

Mr. Fulsom, an expert on Nixon who has written multiple books shedding light on "Tricky Dick", shows an unrivaled understanding of a complicated man and doing justice to a story that is incredibly important to the history of this country. Nixon's fixation on becoming President, and the view of psychological experts, are revealing in Nixon's weaknesses and is brought together by elegant language.

I commend Mr. Fulsom for writing a book that delves deep into the psychology realm, and sometimes discussing wonky politics, while remaining true to telling a compelling story about an individual who would stop at nothing, as we would later know for sure, to attain the highest office in the land.

"Long Overdue"
By Peter Cavanaugh
Don Fulsom again demonstrates his investigative prowess and acute attention to detail in “Treason” -- offering with startling clarity and chilling focus a fascinating narrative revealing the enormity of our 37th President’s flagrant betrayal of trust years before Watergate.

This book is a must-read for anyone seeking a wider understanding of our entire Vietnam experience – tragic involvement doomed to failure from the outset and extended far beyond necessity as a matter of naked political expediency.

Richard M. Nixon awaits your judgment in Don Fulsom’s “Treason” – thoroughly researched, brilliantly written and long overdue.

The Truth Hurts
By Patrick Sloyan
President Nixon was fond of saying that how history treats him depends on the writer. That Don Fulsom turned out to be one of those writers will not let Nixon rest in peace. For seven of Nixon frenetic years in the White House, Fulsom was at his elbow or at least within shouting distance. As a radio reporter for United Press International, Fulsom recorded almost every day of Nixon's actions along with answers to Fulsom's tough questions. Now, with the help of previously classified documents and tape recordings,Fulsom takes us inside the White House bubble where Nixon's Secret Plan to End the War meant 25,000 more dead Americans in the jungles of Vietnam. Nixon and that Harvard genius of foreign affairs, Henry Kissinger, should be forever judged on their failure to walk away from Vietnam, just a President Dwight D. Eisenhower did with the war in Korea. Oh, yes, the China diplomatic recognition. Insignificant compared to the carnage of between 1 and 2 million dead Vietnamese.

Impressive First Read!!
By RedsRomanceReviews
Blake Whitman has made his business successful by following the rules, and never straying from the straight and narrow. He lives for his work, and spends day and night dedicated to ensuring that he is always two steps ahead of everyone else. He also believes that office romances should never come into play, and that business and pleasure should never find themselves in the same room... that is until a certain new secretary catches his eye and has him considering breaking one of his cardinal rules.

Kira Layton is a woman of the people and she is not above pushing the limits to get what she wants, even if that means working for the enemy. She has taken a secretarial job working for the one man she despises in order to see to it that he does right by the people in their community. But when she starts to see things in her new boss that she likes, it leaves her wanting to cross enemy lines to get what she desires...

It was a true pleasure to meet Blake and Kira, the intense chemistry between these two was like a magnet that pulled me right into their world and had me hanging onto their every word. Their story was filled with passion, intensity, and some heated moments that had me in need of a fan! This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I can say with complete certainty it won't be my last!! Definitely a VERY impressive first read, and a book I think should be added to the top of everyone's reading lists!!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher. Cute story. Blake is a work alcoholic. He has lost so many secretaries because of his hours and looks. Kira gave up a high power job and just want to save dogs and her mother’s building. Blake makes a proposition that she works for him as a secretary and he will help her with her charities and saving her mother’s building from revitalization. Once the line are blurred and they transition from boss and security to more; they question each other feelings. A misunderstanding puts a wedge between them but Blake comes through in the end. Loved it. Recommended read.

Loved it!
By MayaTheBookExplorer
I'm so happy I have received this book in advance. I read it in one sitting, because I couldn't put it down. The plot held my interest through the whole book. Also, the characters were real and easy to connect to.

The story starts with Blake, who's a real estate development CEO, being bumped over by Kira and her bunch of dogs. As they part ways neither of them know that fate has other plans for them. When latter that day Blake's secretary suddenly quits and Blake finds himself in dire need of a new one, who better to fill that position other than Kira, that came to his office in hopes to convince him to rethink the demolition of her mothers building.

I quite enjoyed reading Blake's POV. He's your typical workaholic, who has a strict working policy that includes no sexual relationships with his co-workers. It was great to see his inner battle between his working morals and trying not to break his own rules and fall for Kita. In the end, he has almost no choice but to give in to their strong chemistry. Also, seeing how he is with dogs definitely brought him some brownie points.

As for Kira's character, I really liked that she wants to make a difference in her community. She knows what she wants and goes for it. She's also very smart and knows how to achieve her goals. At heart she a wonderful person with a big love for rescued dogs that she even brings to work. Both main characters are made for each other.

For such a short read, the story has developed characters that gradually fall in love. The only thing that bothered me, was the fast paced drama at the end and how they resolved their misunderstanding.

All in all, this is an interesting and pleasant read. :)

Safety-gang: It's a safe read.

He has bought a demon house in Indiana that has been described as a “portal to hell,” summoned the devil at the Hellfire Club in Ireland, and been attacked by a possessed doll in Mexico. But sometimes it’s his interactions with the living that rattle him the most, from innocent people harboring evil spirits to crazed fans to the victims of violent spirit attacks.

Through his investigations of the world’s most haunted places, Zak has learned far more about the living and the dead than anyone should. He’s been to the edge of death and back and come away with a spiritual key that unlocks doors to another world that few have ever seen.

Rambling, unorganized, and self-indulgent. Watch him on T.V. instead.
By KJAL
As a frequent purchaser of e-books in this category, I’ve learned to alter my expectations based on price. Authors who price their books at $1.99 (or even $.99) often have an excellent story to tell, but seldom have the assistance of a traditional publisher or professional editor. I’ve learned to cut these authors some slack since they are riding the publishing trapeze without a net of underlying services (and am often pleasantly surprised with the level of quality they’re able to put out).

When I pay much more than that, however, as I did with this book, my expectations go up accordingly. Because Zak utilized both a publisher (who also produced a hardcover version of the book) and an experienced co-author, I bought with confidence that this book would be professionally done. Unfortunately, what I’ve found is a hot mess of poor editorial choices and a near complete lack of organization.

Chapter one, for example, reads like the sort of off-the-cuff soliloquy spoken into a tape recorder while driving in city traffic—and maybe it was. It moves randomly from veiled criticisms of competing shows to complaints about the shallowness of celebrity culture to spiritualist philosophy and back again. If co-author Crigger was doing anything more than transcribing, it isn’t reflected in the resulting chapter. Someone needed to parse this raw material into a framework that provides some flow and transition. A co-author’s job should have been to suggest something like: Part I: Common investigative methods, their flaws & pitfalls. Part II: What we do differently, how we do it better and have improved over time; Part III: The deep spiritual impact this work has brought to my life; Part IV?: Celebrity culture? Just leave out any mentions of the Biebs, Madonna, and the Kardashians—it just dates your material and makes you look petty. Where was Crigger in this? Either he failed to make these basic suggestions, or Zak’s ego was too big to accept good advice. We may never know why, but Chapter one’s extended rambling creates a very poor first impression for the book.

Chapter two was better—almost. This is where Zak pays tribute to his co-workers on his show. It was great to hear his personal insights and his appreciation for those who have contributed so much to the show’s success. The only problem? The glaring omission of one of the three main investigators: Nick Groff. Did I miss a section about Nick? I paged back through the chapter. No, nothing there. I paged back further to the credits at the beginning. Even Zak’s dog is acknowledged, but no mention of his co-investigator Nick. I can think of any number of reasons for Nick's absence—maybe he asked to be left out for privacy reasons, maybe there is behind-the-scenes conflict that we don’t know about, maybe Nick’s publisher insisted he be left out. But nothing is explained—fans are simply left wondering what they missed.

Chapter three starts out strong with new material about an infested house that Zak bought—material that we haven’t seen from the show. Unfortunately, it stops abruptly with a come-on to check back for Zak’s documentary.

And on it goes.

I still love Zak’s show and respect Zak himself, but this book feels like it was rushed out the door with little work invested—it reads like an attempt to monetize popularity rather than provide any value to his fans and readers. My advice: Watch the show, but think carefully before buying this book.

Lacking a little/a lot.
By Kat
I needed a book to fill some time and thought this was going to be an interesting trip into Zak's head. It was a trip into his head but it wasn't particularly deep and not particularly interesting. I guess I feel that there's more going on with this guy but he's still kind of just skimming the surface. The book was basically a collection of oral essays that he had transcribed. I'm all about the stream of consciousness sort of thing if it leads somewhere but this didn't lead anywhere really.

And if he wasn't ready to "go there" in this book and I mean really sincerely go there instead of just skimming the surface then at least it could have interesting stories about the haunted places or something but the book was lacking in that too.

Poor writing undermines some interesting ideas
By Braden Pickering
Before I get too critical here, just let me say that in spite of his sometimes corny “cool dude” image, I do believe that Zak Bagans truly is an intellectual at heart and his passion for the paranormal is to be taken seriously. As a researcher, author, and clairvoyant myself I applaud him for bringing such topics to light and injecting then into an accessible mainstream dialogue. I enjoyed his first book, the thoughtfully written “Dark World,” but wouldn’t be entirely honest if I said I liked this one nearly as much.

For starters, the writing style just feels off in a way I can’t quite put my finger on. He’s a smart guy, as evidenced by some of his prior work, but the writing here is so simplistic in nature it’s as if he were making a point to pander to those with a 3rd grade intellect. “I went upstairs. There were shadows. It was scary.” I don’t want to sound condescending by putting it that way, but the entire book is presented in such a fashion and it’s frustrating to watch people dumb themselves down when you know they’re capable of so much more. (In fact, because of that, I’m tempted to question how much of this book Bagans himself actually had a hand in.) He also takes every opportunity he can to pat himself on the back by reminding us how creative he is and how much more experience he has under his belt compared to most other paranormal investigators. Practically every other paragraph begins with “As an empath…” and that gets tiresome real quick, especially since he never fully explores exactly what that means for him. I don’t fault him for coming off as a tad douchey, mind you, because he HAS accomplished a lot and lord knows I can toot my own horn when I want to as well. But again, it only serves to further highlight just how poor and repetitive the actual writing is.

On the plus side, if you read his last book, which was very philosophical, you might be glad to know that Bagans opens up a bit more about himself and delves into more personal territory this time around. He touches on subjects such as his plastic surgery, ex-girlfriends, fame, and shares a handful of anecdotes about crazy fans and why he likes to shy away from the limelight as much as possible when he isn’t working. I found the chapter about the airplane bathroom mishap particularly amusing because not only was it hilarious anyway, but it was one of the few instances where it felt like his true personality was finally breaking through the walls he spent the previous 200 pages building up around it.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts so take them as you will. Zak seems like a tough guy to get to know, and this book certainly did him no favors in that respect. Though I have criticized the writing style I can’t help but feel perhaps it’s an intentional method of keeping the reader at arm’s length, but then I suppose I would have to wonder why he’d want to publish another book at all if that were the case. It’s hard to say. In any event, if you’re a more casual fan of Bagans or the Ghost Adventures TV show I would cautiously recommend “I am Haunted” as an easy way to kill a weekend, but if you’re more research-minded and are looking for a resource to return to again and again, just stick with “Dark World.”

Another Good Addition to the Series
By Tiffany
I love the "Once Upon a Time" series, and this was another good addition written by Cameron Dokey. The story seems to go off of the Disney movie a bit, while mixing in a bit of the original Chinese legend and still being its own tale.

Again, like in Ms. Dokey's previous works, the characters in the story are varied and realistic. Mulan is not a perfect character, and much of the book spends time explaining how she became the young woman who would join the Chinese army in her father's place. Her childhood is explored, as well as her relationship with her father. I liked how time was spent really getting to know and understand Mulan before she went off to war.

The male protagonist, though he shows up about half-way through the book, is done well. He is as three-dimensional as he can get in his page time, and is a very likable character. His relationship with Mulan is more believable because of their encounters and conversations.

The story is a bit sadder than previous ones in the series, but then again, it does include a war. Still, the ending is happy and beautiful. Ms. Dokey does a good job of painting a image of Mulan's home and other imagery.

I think this is better for the series than the previous book, Belle, for its interpretation is more easily accepted (Beauty and the Beast is hard to write for since so many people have set examples of how the story should be, where Mulan only has the popular Disney movie and not the exact ballad to offer most people).

I would recommend this book for those who like the series, or who are willing to read another Cameron Dokey novel similar in quality to some of her previous novels. Easy to read and get through quickly. Good for a lazy afternoon or rainy day.

"This One Has a Monkey's Tongue..."
By R. M. Fisher
The "Once Upon a Time" series takes traditional fairytales and gives them a new spin, either by rationalizing the magical elements (as in Snow) or by setting them in a more contemporary time period (such as Water Song). They make for short but sweet little reads; like Hershey's Chocolate Drops, they're hardly anything to get *too* excited over, but can provide a new point-of-view to stories you've been hearing since you were a child. Cameron Dokey is perhaps the most popular contributor to the series, and her titles are amongst the best installments, including The Storyteller's Daughter, Beauty Sleep and Before Midnight.

"Wild Orchid" is based on "The Ballad of Mulan," which (along with Sunlight and Shadow, a retelling of The Magic Flute and Spirited the second version of Beauty and the Beast in this series) suggests that the authors are running out of material. Not exactly a "fairytale," the legend of Mulan is probably best known to Western audiences through the Disney film adaptation: Mulan. So it was with some interest that I picked up "Wild Orchid," knowing little about the source material and interested in how the story would play out.

Hua Mulan is a young Chinese girl who has been taught the ways of warfare by her best friend and neighbour Li Po. Left mainly to her own devices thanks to her long-absent father, Mulan grows up acutely aware of how different she is from other young women (told in first-person narrative, she spends most of the first chapter driving this point home to us). When her general father eventually returns home she is eager to get to know him, partly because she longs to learn more about her mother, whom her father married for love and whose name has not been uttered since Mulan's birth.

But China is under threat from the Huns, and when Mulan's father finally returns home she is concerned about his health, not to mention the condition of his new wife. Deciding not to risk his death in battle, or to split up the newlyweds, Mulan disguises herself as a boy and rides out to join the army in his place. By the time this occurs, we are already halfway through the book, and Mulan's experiences in the army seem rather rushed as a result. Meeting the youngest son of the Emperor, Prince Jian, Mulan eventually proves herself (to friends, family and love interests alike) in a satisfying though rather predictable way.

At times Mulan *does* come across as something of a Mary Sue, what with her tenacity, determination and ability to do absolutely anything, including come up with war strategies that nobody else can think of, beat the prince himself in archery practice, and be universally adored by everyone she meets. Still, when you think of the original ballad, in which the titular character bests her father in a sword fight, goes unrecognized for years whilst fighting in the army, and who is applauded for her efforts when the truth finally comes out, the character has actually been toned down in regard to her abilities!

Dokey is usually quite good with the first-person narrative voice, but here it grates slightly thanks to Mulan's Western-style diction and her incessant ponderings on how different she is from everyone else. Considering her differences also make her indisputably *better* than everyone else, I'm not sure why she's complaining. Likewise, Mulan's romance with Prince Jian is completely unconvincing, though the two of them do manage to secure their future together in a rather touching way. That being said, this is one of the few books in this series that I wished had a higher page count, just to give us more details on the characters and situations.

There are some interesting differences here when compared to the Disney version; Dokey correctly uses "Hua" as Mulan's family name (instead of Fa, as in the movie) and correctly translates Mulan's given name as "wood orchid" (whereas the Disney film seemed to suggest it had something to do with blossoms). But the unique thing about "Wild Orchid" is that it is not a "retelling" of the ballad, but simply a fleshed-out version of it. As such, it's difficult to really place it within the "fairytale" canon of the other books in the series, though as always it serves as a mild, diverting read that sheds new light on an old tale. As always, Dokey serves up a strong and rewarding story.

Mulan's mother died during labor. Her father, a great General in the army, was heartbroken. He's never been home since he heard the news. Thus, Mulan lost both her parents on the same day.

Mulan is not your typical girl. Instead, she climbs trees and despises needlework. She meets the boy next door and the two of them form a friendship. He teaches her archery, how to ride a horse, how to use a sword, and, finally, how to read and write.

When her father comes home, everything changes. First, she must learn how to trust and obey him. Second, she must learn how to love him and her new stepmother. Just when she's finally found herself a new family, the Huns appear on the horizon of China. The men are called back to war.

Mulan, unwilling to let her father go with a bad leg and a new family, disguises herself and takes his place instead. Her first day there, she catches the ears of one of the king's sons. He engages her in an archery contest. From then on, Mulan is famous throughout the camp.

With the Huns quickly approaching, all three princes have different ideas on how to defend China. Mulan mistakenly speaks out during a strategizing session. Prince Jian immediately seizes her idea. But will it be enough to save China?

This new ONCE UPON A TIME addition weaves together the wonders of ancient China, a budding romance, a feisty girl, and the true meaning of both friendship and family in a fantastic fairy tale edition.
