Add black and white vintage illustrations and you have a powerful yet easily accessed health history reference.

I purchased this book for a class I was taking and then I was going to turn around and sell it, but It's a great read! Not to sound too morbid, but the Information and history of how diseases have affected the course of history and how they continue to shape our world is just amazing.

A whirlwind tour of epidemics, too superficial to be useful

This survey of every epidemic and pandemic known to mankind since the dawn of written records is an epic unto itself. Starting with the Athens epidemic in 430 BC, the author takes us on a step-by-step voyage through everything from the endemic malaria of ancient Rome to modern "mad cow" disease. The chapters are divided into seven subsections: When and Where (basic facts), Significance, Background, How it Was Understood at the Time, Responses, Unresolved Historical Issues, and Suggestions for Additional Reading. Given how exciting mass exterminations of human beings are, this book should have made for some great reading.

Unfortunately, the author of this book bit off more than he could chew. Each brief chapter is a whirlwind tour of a disease shoved into a historical description that is too general to be enlightening. Moreover, because Hays is a historian rather than a medical researcher, the truly fascinating details of the diseases themselves are lacking. To make matters worse, Hays writes in a high school textbook style that is completely devoid of meaningful interpretation, theoretical framework, or even a sense of genuine interest. As a consequence, Epidemics and Pandemics literally put me to sleep. (And I thought nobody could make the Black Death seem dull.)

Most good books written about epidemics are written by epidemiologists, but, believe it or not, some of the best books on this topic are fiction. The Doomsday Book, by Connie Willis, is science fiction, but it is the best description of the Black Death I have ever read. If you want to really understand the impact of an epidemic, read historical fiction.

However, while these artists focused largely on man's inhumanity towards fellow man, Sue Coe broadens the perspective to include atrocities committed by man against fellow animals. Indeed, many of Coe's works reference the style and imagery of Weimar-era art, drawing uncomfortable and controversial comparisons between the slaughterhouses of the meat industry and those of the Holocaust.

Excellent introduction to the Court

This is a terrific book that explains the "ins and outs" of the Supreme Court. McGuire takes you inside the action through a series of in-depth case studies. He looks at the nominations of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas, and cases the Court decided that deal with federal control of the drinking age, racial discrimination in the death penalty, free speech for organized crime figures, and campaign finance law. But, he chooses these cases wisely, because each of them is used to illustrate the findings of political science research. The stories McGuire tells are great to read, but you end up learning a lot about the things that determine how the Court makes its decisions, from the law and Court precedent to interest groups and the justices' own personal preferences. He's really very fair in his evaluation of these issues, too. McGuire packs a lot of information into this little book, so if you're looking for a great way to learn about the politics of the Supreme Court, this is it!

Nice light Novella for the holidays

I enjoyed reading this novella (because it was short I wouldn't really call it a novel). It is a light Victorian romp through the problems we create for ourselves, or sometimes have created for us. During the romp, some characters find love they thought they had lost and others discover that sometimes you have to create your own Christmas miracles.

Lady Prudence's mother has just one wish for Christmas, for her husband to stop gambling before the family ends up in debtor's prison. Edward Prescott had been drinking and gambling ever since his son was killed in an accident the year before, and by now the family was nearing the point where they couldn't pay the debts anymore. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and so Lady Prudence decides to take some extreme measures to "cure" her father's addiction.

One thing to keep in mind with this story is that it is a light novella, and it does NOT delve deeply into what it would mean to have addiction. As long as you keep those things in mind, most people will enjoy the novel. If you want a serious look at addiction, this is not it.

Delightful, warm, loving, Christmas story of family love and devotion, redemption, courage in pursuit of loved ones difficulties. What more could one need in a Christmas story? I am glad I found it.

About the Author
Uppaluri Gopala Krishnamurti (July 9, 1918 – March 22, 2007), known as U.G. Krishnamurti, or just U.G., was an Indian sage who spoke of his enlightenment openly. Although necessary for day to day functioning of the individual, in terms of the Ultimate Reality or Truth he rejected the very basis of thought and in doing so negated all systems of thought and knowledge in reference to It.

Question of Source and Copyrights?!?

U.G. wrote no books, he held informal discussions with small groups of people who came to him with questions. Others have recorded his talks and some have been published in book form -- all at his insistence without copyright! This book does not seem to have a publisher, no mention of who transcribed the talks, and no introduction, so I am curious who has printed and edited the talks in this book.

The transcription of the conversation with David Bohm is not rare, and this conversation can be heard freely on the internet at archive.org. The original audio is in the possession of friends of U.G., and anyone can find it on the internet. The conversation between David Bohm and U.G. Krishnamurti is also featured in `The Biology of Enlightenment', edited by Mukunda Rao.
