Review: Indian Political Trials 1775 - 1947

Political trials are characterized by an attempt to foist a partisan political decision via a judicial process. They are neatly stage-managed at the behest of the authority through the vicarious vocal chords of the judges to give a veneer of judicial respectability. They are generally a sham, in all respects, but occasionally the stage-managed trials backfire on the authorities as well.

Pre-independent India had a taste of many such stage-managed political trials and A.G. Noorani selects twelve of these - starting from the execution of Raja Nandakumar of Bengal by Warren Hastings in 1775, to the arrest of Sheikh Abdullah by the state of Kashmir in 1947 - in his book "Indian Political Trials 1775 - 1947".

In this book, A.G. Noorani painstakingly documents the turbulent difficulties underwent by the prosecutors and the persecuted in the political trials staged in pre-independence India. The book is thoroughly researched and pieces together information from the historically visible and obscure documents and provides a rich portrayal of the political and judicial conduct of the British in India from 1775 till 1947. After reading the book one cannot but simultaneously admire and despise the British for who they were.

Historicist Interpretation of Bible Prophecy in everyday language

These two books by Mervyn Maxwell explain very well the historicist interpretation of Daniel and Revelation in everyday language that is easily comprehended by any reader. The format is easy to follow, and the diagrams and visuals aid in the concise presentation of the material.

These are very important books for understanding the interpretation of apocalyptic Bible prophecy.

OMG! One of the best Debut Novel I read, a must!

OMG, I don't know why, but this year is filled with fantastic book! So you see me coming with this comment: The Last Keeper's Daughter was phenomenal! Well some of you might say that I am exaggerating, but if you are fans of paranormal romance, this book is a must!

I'm a cover whore and I must admit that I almost refuse the review request for this book, because I wasn’t attracted to the cover. Then I read the blurb and I knew immediately that there was something new to discover!

I haven't been disappointed! OMG, I so loved this story, it contained almost every elements to make me drool, fantasize and the suspense surrounding the origins of Lily was almost unbearable, but ideal to keep me hooked!

Mainly, Lily is the only daughter of the last Keeper. After the death of his father, Lily learns that entrusted to his future, his protection, his life the king of vampires, Krieger. However, Lily is not aware of the supernatural world that surrounds it. Lily is a rather shy woman and erased. She does not like attention, but the fact of becoming the new king of the vampires protected attracts many curious and dangerous situations.

Krieger is the king vampire, he is rich, power and authority is incredible. Krieger seems attracted by Lily at first; he will discover that it is much more than just human.

Several aspects to the book were very interesting and creative:

The disappearance of Walter, Lily's father,
The true nature of the death of Lily's mother,
Protection and origins of Lily
Discovery of the paranormal world: Vampires, Dragons, Vantors are vampires/werewolves!
All these beautiful males alpha (they are everywhere!)

I don't know how to explain it, but I was eager and excited to learn more about Lily's past, but also her relationship with Krieger.

The reading was easy, fluid, all had a sense and I was immediately attracted to this beautiful and mysterious Lily. The author, Rebecca Trogner knows how to keep the reader in suspense and the course of the story is fast but well established. I think only one thing: Read the sequel as soon as possible! Can I??? Pretty please!?!?!? :D

Stand Alone: Yes, but you will surely want to read the next book, if there's one!

Hotness: Krieger, since I'm a vampire freak, but I had to also mention Liam, a Vantor and Lucien, a Slayer!

Best Vampire story ever

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first read this book as I've been disappointed by the 'vampire' books that have come out since Anne Rice's "Interview with a Vampire." So reading "The Last Keeper's Daughter" was literally truly an unexpected pleasure and delight. I won't go into a plot synopsis since other reviewers have, but I will say that Ms. Trogner is a wonderful writer. Each scene and setting is written in an easy, yet concise, style. Her characters stay true to themselves and each voice is clear and distinct. Lily, the main character, is an absolute jewel. Immediately upon meeting her you want to get to the heart of who she is and you root for her throughout the book. I think I can safely promise that anyone who reads "The Last Keepers Daughter," will absolutely find it to be one of their favorite novels.

Urban Fantasy/Mystery cross over shows a lot of potential.

I am always up for a good book that crosses genres and is hard to define. This book looked like it would be a good fit for me, a Paranormal Romance that is also a Mystery. After reading this book, I am not sure that I agree with the Romance portion. It felt more Urban Fantasy/Mystery to me. There is definite paranormal aspects, and there is some romantic aspects, but there was no HEA at the end of this story. And an Happily Ever After is one of the primary criteria for me for Paranormal Romance. Let's just say that if you like books that can't be easily pigeon holed, than this is a book for you.

The story starts with a Prologue and some back story on Walter Ayers. This is important because it will be the only time that we will be able to actually interact with Walter. He is an old man, father to Lily and the keeper for the North American Vampire King Krieger. He basically makes a deal with the King for
Krieger to take care of Lily.

Chapter one puts us into Lily's head. From the beginning you aren't sure whether she has some form of autism or some similar condition. She doesn't speak and looks at the world in an odd and unique way. Lily has no idea about the Others. But when she falls and is seriously injured at a charity event held on the grounds of her family's estate, that she learns the truth and finally begins to understand that she is stronger than she knows.

This is also the story of Detective Dale Hunter. He is drawn into the world of the others while on an investigation into the brutal murder of two men. Detective Hunter is recruited by the Elder of the Others to investigate the murders and figure out what is going on. His investigation leads him from Europe to North America and crosses with the mystery that is Lily and her Otherness.

This was a good book. I am thrilled to see that the author is currently working on a sequel. The main mystery in this book was solved. Unfortunately it left me with even more questions that needed answers. There were times that I was a little confused, especially while in Lily's head. But I think those were deliberate, done to help illustrate how Lily is growing and changing. I am going to go with 3 stars on Goodreads. This series has a lot of potential and I want to see where the author takes it.

Also the author of Kingdom Matrix: Designing a Church for the Kingdom of God, he and his wife, Laura, live in Oakville, Ontario. They have two children.

Move Over February!

In this book Jeff Christopherson and Mac Lake have not revealed the “keys” to the kingdom, rather they have illuminated some of the “secrets” of the kingdom lived out by Jesus himself. We only have two occasions in the New Testament when Jesus used the word “church”. But each gospel reverberates, dozens of times, with his use of the term “kingdom”. Rest assured these secrets are not “pie-in-the-sky” platitudes but gospel truth able to assist church planters in planting churches with a "huge degree of practicality". My favorite book on disciple making (and church planting) has always been Robert Coleman’s Master Plan of Evangelism. I read it every year in the month of my birth. Move over February, I think I found another classic in the making that I need to revisit again and again and again…..

Answering the call to plant a church or to be a church planting team member is not an easy journey, but Jeff and Mac have provided a resource in Kingdom First that is an easy read and an extremely practical tool. What appears in the pages of Kingdom First I have been blessed to live out- both in serving on a core group with Mac at a church plant in Myrtle Beach, SC, and as a planting support player with Jeff through the North American Mission Board. Both men share their passion for planting as a key to sustainable Kingdom growth thoughtfully and pragmatically. Their heart leaps out as I read it! Kingdom First reads as a gentile playbook for planting churches that plant churches. I think those called to plant churches or to serve as a church planting team member will have a hard time putting this book down or leaving its pages black and white. It's that good!

A beautiful blend of depth and relevance!

It is rare to be able to have a resource on church planting that lays both a solid theological foundation combined with relevant practical expression in one work. Christopherson and Lake have given us both in Kingdom First. From a missiological perspective, this book will expand your ability to see the necessary components to advance the Kingdom through a God-glorifying movement of establishing new communities of faith. From a practitioner's perspective, you will see a clear path to take in understanding and preparing for the high call of church planting. This book is both a beautiful blend of depth and relevance. These two guys have produced a work that not only serves as a guide for church planting but will challenge and inspire any leader and disciple-maker. Every pastor and potential church planter should make this a "must read" and "multiple-read" book!

Brilliant! A crushing refutation of the idea that John was written for an isolated community

This is the best book of biblical scholarship I have read in a long time. Klink so thoroughly demolishes the idea of community that I cannot imagine how anyone could resuscitate the concept.

And what is so stunning about this is that just thirty years ago, in a survey of scholarship about John, Robert Kysar wrote that "'The gospel cannot be read meaningfully apart from some understanding of the community out of which and to which it was written'" (p 247). Recently, however, Kysar admitted the idea of an isolated community was seen as less and less likely.

And now, after Klink, 'Sitze im Leben' appears to be dead and buried.

Klink goes through all the evidence and points out all the usual flaws with the argument, noting the dangerous circularity of depending upon the text alone to explain the audience, the form critics who thought everything could be explained by understanding the genre, and the plain fact that the term 'community' "is one of the most elusive terms to define" (p 51).

Klink, in contrast, relies on plain facts. He goes through Martyn's research on Judaism and asks the obvious question: "Why, if Judaism could have been so organized and unified, according to Martyn, could not Christianity have had a similar recognition of identity?...The fact that Paul went to Jerusalem more than once...implies a wide recognition of the functional centrality of Christian leadership" (pp 60-61).

No kidding. It is striking that all the earliest Christian literature, from Paul's epistles to the epistles of Ignatius, involve one functioning group of Christians in contact with another group, and, usually, many groups. Against these plain facts the idea of isolated communities is untenable.

For far too long, the concept of Christianity as a sectarian movement has held sway, in spite of the gross oversimplifications associated with the concept. Klink picks through all the various research by Malina, Meeks, Troeltsch, Stark, and others, sifts the results, and concludes "community need not be defined territorially, but relationally...(and) The traditions of the Gospels' origens were meant to confirm that the Gospels were rooted in the apostles and in the antiquity of the church" (p 106).

Klink relies upon Richard Burridge and his famous book 'What are the Gospels' to point out that "rarely were bioi around the time of Gospels used specifically for a closed 'group'" (p 113).

Klink further asks if 'the implied reader is assumed to know the Beloved Disciple" (p 162). He goes through the evidence in the Lazarus narrative, the evidence given in John about the customs and geography, which he decides points away from the author having expected the reader to know much about Galilean geography, and, most of all, the implication that the reader must have had extensive background in the Old Testament. All of which argues against John being aimed at a local community since the reader's knowledge, as implied, is so uneven.

In short, Klink states "that the Gospels were written for an indefinite audience, not an individual 'church' or network of churches" (p 249)

Guide & Practice, with nice online component- makes it easy to concentrate on individual sections of the 4 part GED

This actually comes with an online component, as well as the book, which includes two practice tests with rationales, Though it is thick, once you start reading through it, you realize it's not nearly as intimidating as it looks. A good portion of it is the test, with lots of empty space, room for graphics, and rationales that you may or may not even need to read.

There's a website online, and don't worry about a lack of a code- on registration it will have you look up a page in the book and give a word that's easy to find. Then there's a shopping cart, but the balance will be 0.00 so there's no more cost.

The book also helps with instructions on how to register and schedule your test. Since this book came out, in a lot of states passing scores have dropped from 150 per section to 145- if this includes your state, it will let you know that when you go to this GED testing site that the book lists. Georgia happens to be one of those states. Other than that, and that did just change in the last couple of weeks- everything about the book seems very current and updated.
Just don't let the size of the book intimidate you. My son decided to break the test down into 4 sections since it costs the same no matter what, and that's what the people at the test center recommended to him. The book makes it easy to concentrate on one section of the test at a time if that is what you wish to do too.

I trust Kaplan. I got my nursing license using Kaplan's test prep, and I was so prepared that I blew through the test so fast I thought surely I'd missed a large segment of it somehow. All my instructors always said if you can pass the Kaplan practice tests, you'll have no trouble on the real thing.

Way more helpful than I thought it would be. ...

Way more helpful than I thought it would be. I probably learned more taking the pretest in this book, than I did sitting in class for five years. If you want to get your GED out of the way quick, this book is the way to go!

#2 GED test prep on my scale!

Of all the different study guides that I've received or bought (I purchased the 2015 version of this and received the 2016 Premier version to review as well), this on ranks in at number 2 for me, right after the 2016 Premier version.

A noticeable difference between Kaplan's guides and others (especially the ones for "idiots" or from a certain Mc-Book company), Kaplan's are not riddled with errors!

The large book LOOKS daunting, but because of how it is arranged and presented, along with it's ability to point out key importances, it is very easy and straight forward to follow. Comprehension and knowledge retention seems to be much higher because of this.

Now why only three stars, it's not perfect nor does it hold up as well as the Premier version. Because of this, it gets a solid three stars. I would still recommend this book, but for only a few dollars more I would HIGHLY recommend Kaplan's GED Test Premier 2016. It has better online access/help/strategies and just seems more complete for helping you through the entire process and tests.

You're a pilot, a Captain no less with Cathay Pacific - one of the world's most prestigious airlines. One day you receive a DHL package at your home in Hong Kong. You're fired! Review
This book is a cautionary tale for all pilots, both union and non-union. It is a riveting read and has some serious salutary lessons for all professional pilots. If BALPA was a school, it would be compulsory reading.

About the Author
John Warham graduated from The College of Air Training, Hamble in 1975 and began working in the same year as a commercial pilot for Casair Aviation Services in Teesside. He flew for British Air Ferries (Southend), Air Transcontinental (Windsor) and Monarch Airlines (Luton) before realising his boyhood dream as a Boeing 747 captain with Cathay Pacific, based in Hong Kong. As president of the Hong Kong Airline Pilots Association, he worked with the International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations on Flight Time Limitations and industrial issues in the 1990s and was awarded an IFALPA Presidential Citation in 2003. He currently lives in Hong Kong and is an honorary member of the Royal Air Force Association.

Whatever it takes - A Fight for Justice

This book gripped me from the very beginning; for me, it was one of those "couldn't put it down" reads. It may well serve as an unofficial aviation bible for anyone who finds themselves in a similar position to the author. It will also appeal to the layman as Mr. Warham has written the book in a no nonsense way and done away with the `bells and whistles'.

The book starts with the author explaining how he got into aviation and worked his way up through the ranks and became a senior pilot on the Boeing 747 with Cathay Pacific Airways. Later, as well as being a pilot, Mr. Warham also became a prominent member of the HKAOA (Hong Kong Aircrew Officer Association) and then the Chief Negotiator with the CPU (Cathay Pilots Union). Whilst holding this position with the unions their main aim was to negotiate a better rostering practice for the pilots in an attempt to make the operation safer for themselves and the passengers they carried, and to reduce the stress the pilot's were under, which can ultimately cause something known as `cumulative fatigue'. The senior management however had little interest in the union's efforts and their pleas went largely ignored.

Cathay Pacific then sacked 49 pilots and in effect threw them out of their jobs and defamed them in the press and industry at large to the point where they became virtually unemployable. Cathay claimed that they were not sacked because of their union activities but because they were "not acting in the company's best interests", something the 49ers vehemently disagreed with and they eventually proved that this was not the case.

In a bitter twist and at a crucial point in the negotiations the union is suddenly split and one of the author's union colleagues and best friends, who also fought for the same issues and sat by his side throughout the negotiations, jumps ship without mentioning his intentions and tries to set up a break-away union on his own. This only serves to undo a lot of work which had taken years to set up just when it seemed the CPU were making progress with the Cathay management.

Throughout his career Mr. Warham obviously tried to uphold and pass on valuable legacies handed down to him by his father and his Uncle, who both fought in the RAF in WWII, and people in the industry who left a lasting impression on him. Two great quotes in this book are "the best we can hope for is to put as much back into it as we derive from it and leave our profession in a better condition than when we entered it", and later on when some of the senior Cathay management find themselves on the witness stand and wishing they were somewhere else entirely is "with responsibility comes accountability".

The author reveals how the Director of Flight Operations for Cathay Pacific at the time had a degree in `Zoology' - go figure! - and no experience whatsoever in the aviation industry prior to joining the airline. He explains how he'd seen the airline go from working with the staff to working against them, and he lays the blame squarely with the men at the top, The Swires of London, for their mismanagement of the airline.

I had some (what I later found out to be) misconceptions not only about commercial pilots but also the airline industry itself. I now have a better understanding of how the aviation industry operates and also how the legal system works in Hong Kong, and for me this book was a real eye-opener.

A very important point made by the 49ers (only 18 of them "the hard men" managed to stay the full course and later termed themselves the `Band Of Brothers') was that at no time had any of them breached the terms of their contracts. Mr. Warham states, as it currently stands no one employed in Hong Kong from any profession, regardless of their seniority within that company, can expect any protection from their contract of employment. As, in a court of law in Hong Kong their contract will be worthless. The author tells how he's still a shareholder in Cathay Pacific and how he would one day like the airline to succeed and be an airline that people are proud to represent.

A very well-written book that left me wondering whether or not there will be a sequel.

You couldn't make it up!

This book is required reading for anyone who works for a company in lands where the labour laws are 'relaxed', for crew, union reps, managers and lawyers everywhere and especially for those who worked for Cathay Pacific at the time. The names of the usual suspects will bring memories flooding back.

Captain John Warham begins by taking us through the journey from student pilot via adversity to B747 command. Some of the steps may surprise the uninitiated.

'The 49ers' has the elements of a thriller novel: bad guys, good guys, surprise evidence, cliffhangers, tragedy and death except that this is no fabrication; the tragedies and deaths are only too real.

An airline's attempt to impose reduced Conditions of Service and to have non-pilots order captains to extend duty periods (legally permitted only at the captain's discretion) escalates to the point where 49 pilots are summarily fired. The pilots are publicly defamed, making it difficult or impossible for them to find alternative employment. Their efforts to achieve justice are blocked by lies, obfuscation and attempts to run them out of legal funds.

A pilot kills himself; another pilot's partner hangs herself and two months later he dies of a heart attack aged 35 leaving a young daughter. The author suffers a myocardial infarction.

It took eight years to bring the case against the company to trial and the court proceedings are skilfully described by Captain Warham using cricket analogy for the cut and thrust or, should one say, delivery and batting of cross questioning and re-examination. Counsel's questions are played defensively or batted for a six with the Judge as Umpire rebuking him as necessary.

Fast paced action builds to a climax with occasional gems from the author such as: "(witness) xxxxxx was finally sent back to the pavilion having failed to trouble the scorer to any great extent"

American readers may be a little confused by the cricket analogies but please persevere and put it down to: 'Time spent in reconnaissance is never wasted'.

The book even ends on a cliffhanger. As it went to print a final decision from The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal was still awaited.

So, did the AOA/CPU make the right choices? Did the managers play a straight bat? Read the book and ask yourself what you'd have done at each stage of the progression.

N.B. For those unfamiliar with the theatre of operations: Remember, as you make your decisions, that you do not have the employment protection of North America, Western Europe or Australia/NZ and Cathay can be a very authoritative company!

A tale for our times

This is a sad story, and also an uplifting one about the resilience of the human spirit when faced with dramatic changes to their lives. I have to declare an interest here, as I was a 747 Captain with Cathay Pacific but retired before this whole issue came to a head. In fact, had I not done so, I'm convinced that I also would have been one of the 49ers!

The fascinating thing for me is the exposure of all the "behind the scenes" activity in this book. As a Member of the Union, I was only told what I needed to know and trust my colleagues to do their best for me. This I happily did - along with many others. The revelations about false information, deceit, disregard for the welfare of the crews and arrogance of Management is an object lesson for all. The transcripts of the Court case are fascinating - you can virtually see Cathay Management wriggling on the hook as their falsehoods are dissected with the rapier of a very competent QC!

There are lessons for all to be learnt here. A fascinating read, and not only for those in the aviation world.
